Cello Lessons at United Conservatory of Music Fresno prepare students to achieve technical proficiency and musical excellence. Our curriculum emphasizes balanced posture, beautiful tone production, accurate intonation, musicianship skills, and leads students through a sequential body of repertoire. 

Our Cello Instructors are very skilled and hold either, bachelor or masters degrees in music. Our teachers implement various methods in their teaching style including Suzuki and the traditional conservatory style which incorporates scales, etudes, sight reading, and appropriate repertoire based on the student's level and theory. In addition to weekly lessons, many of UCM's students participate in our Chamber Music and Group Lesson program. The benefits are immense for growth and is a very enjoyable experience.

Playing the cello can be a rewarding experience for both beginner and advanced students alike! It’s a beautiful sounding instrument that is often described as the closest instrument comparable to the human voice.

Becoming proficient at an instrument takes work and effort. The best musicians of all time practiced for hours on end in technical and musical skills.

Here are some ways to keep up your cello playing and make your practice time more productive.

Divide Up Your Practicing

To become great at a skill, we need to spend a lot of time at it, here are some ways to divide things up!

1. Basics – Warm up with your exercises, here are a few that may be helpful

2. Songs and Pieces– Now’s the time to work on the songs that your teacher gave you! Work on measures that are particularly difficult, or listen to some Youtube videos on your favorite cellists and try to imitate them. Ask your teacher for advice and always remember to practice with a metronome so you can have great rhythm.

3. Exploration and Experimentation– Improvise a melody and whatever you’ve heard that comes to you! Listen to your favorite recordings and make some things up!

Don’t Get Stuck

Mix things up so that you don’t repeat the same things every day. As you master one set of exercises or pieces, find new ones to keep yourself engaged. If things become too overwhelming, take a step back and try something a bit less challenging! You can always find a way to grow in your cello playing while you are mixing things up.

Practicing Quietly

Cellos can be a difficult instrument to practice because of how LOUD it can be! Consider buying a cello mute so you don’t drive your family or neighbors crazy if you are practicing late at night.
